Roasted Shishito Pepper Hummus

Nothing beats fresh, local, seasonal produce. And, CSAs or community supported agriculture is how I load up on the most nutrient dense produce available.

Usually, CSAs are weekly or biweekly shares of local fruits and vegetables and sometimes meat, seafood, bread, dairy, eggs, and other local goods. Some CSAs deliver to you, others have designated pick up locations. Each CSA looks a bit different in terms of items offered, delivery, frequency, etc.. Regardless of the logistics, participating is one of the best ways to support your local farms and have the freshest seasonal produce available.

Here in New York, we have many CSA options. I’m IN LOVE with Local Roots based in New York City. Local Roots is a modern CSA or a customizable farmers market that you subscribe to ahead of time. The subscription enables local farmers to grow amazing food with more financial security. When you subscribe, you choose what you want in your share (vegetables, fruit, eggs, mushrooms, greens, meat, dairy, etc.) and then you pick up at the location most convenient for you- the markets are located throughout Manhattan & Brooklyn! (There’s also a delivery service). The food is farm fresh and never travels more than 200 miles to get to you! That’s revolutionary considering most food travels an average of 1,500 miles.
